North Star Manual Therapy, Inc. Site Creation By: Craig Powell (512) 699-8015

What is manual therapy?

Manual therapy is used to describe many different types of hands on treatment. From joint mobilization, manipulations, to myofascial release and massage. In my practice, it is the use of hands on soft tissue manipulation to realign fascial and soft tissue distortions, therefore, allowing the body to perform without limitation and relieving pain and dysfunction.

How is this work different than traditional therapy?

The techniques used are based on a whole body approach. I use my hands and senses to isolate very specific soft tissue restrictions based on a fascial distortion model. Once these restrictions are ID’d, deep tissue manipulation is used to re-align the distortion and return normal function and movement creating pain free functions.

What is fascia?

Fascia is the primary connective tissue of the body. It is a very thin fibrous tissue found in and around muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, organs, etc. When distorted and twisted, it restricts movements of these structures creating compensation and resulting in pain and dysfunction.

How can acute injuries such as sprains and muscle pulls be fixed so quickly?

Many acute injuries are not actually problems of the muscle, tendons, or ligaments, but rather the fascial interface surrounding them. Once these problems are ID based on your specific presentation, the distortions are re-aligned creating immediate pain relief and increased strength. Many times, you are ready to perform in game ready situations without limitations after only one treatment.

Is it better to wait a few days after an injury before being treated?

Absolutely not! The longer you wait, the harder the injury is to fix due to tissue memory, learned compensation and further fascial separation. The fresher the injury, the easier it is to treat allowing you a quicker recovery .

Can injuries be prevented?

Yes, overuse of tissue during practice, training and repetition creates micro-trauma to the fascia. This sets you up for injury. Proper tissue/fascial alignment can prevent future injuries and many times improve speed, strength, vertical and agility.

Do you treat all types of conditions?

Yes, from Headaches to TMJ, Rotator Cuff to Sciatica, acute to chronic. Since all tissue is alive and working together in rhythm, it must be well balanced and aligned. Many times old injuries create new injuries due to over-compensation and imbalance, therefore pushing tissue to failure, resulting in pain and further compensation

Why is it necessary for a medical referral?

We as P.T.’s are required by the state Physical Therapy Board to have a referral in our possession prior to all treatment. It will also help with insurance reimbursement. This referral can come from any traditional medical professional (M.D., D.O., DDS, D.C., ANP, etc.)
